UNABLE TO USE the light in case the men following me could see it, I stayed to the right of the cave so I wouldn't miss the channel once I'd gotten that far. I wouldn't know when I reached it, not in the inky darkness surrounding me. Memories of being buried alive in an abandoned mine in Arizona popped into my brain and a shudder traveled through me. At least I didn't have to contend with snakes this time. The water was too cold for vipers or Cantils. At least, I hoped so. With any luck, I'd last long enough to get to the channel and beyond, and then find a place to hide.
My teeth chattered and I found it hard to swim. The splashing behind me sounded a lot closer and I switched to sidestroke to minimize noise. My breath came in bursts and echoed like a bomb going off in my ears, although realistically I knew they wouldn't be able to distinguish my breathing from the other cave sounds. Not unless they were close.
My arms growing numb from the cold, I hooked both hands over the float and continued to kick, head first and lying on my back. Low voices floated toward me across the water and light bounced off the walls of the cave.
I'd have to find a place to hide. I doubted I could even lift myself out of the water at this point.
As the light grew I pushed myself to kick harder but still they gained on me. The icy cold had seeped into my body and I found it increasingly difficult to move. A few more minutes and they'd round the corner. The light would find its way to me and I'd be dead in the water.
Literally.
This was the way it was going to end? Dying of hypothermia or a bullet to the head in a cave in Mexico, hunted by my ex-lover's thugs? Seriously?
Fuck that.
With supreme effort, I willed my legs to kick faster, ignoring the deepening numbness. Taking a full breath proved difficult but I kept moving, ignoring the voice in my head telling me my pursuers could hear me.
Without warning the current accelerated and my strokes became easier. I'd reached the channel divide. The float picked up speed as every kick propelled me faster and further along. Soon, the sound of gurgling current replaced the splashing of the men behind me and once again I found myself in complete darkness.
Exhausted, I clung to the float, wishing I'd asked the guide more about the river. How deep was it? Were there rocks or other obstacles I might run into? How long until I reached a place where I could get out?
And more importantly, did the channel remain open, like it was now, or did it narrow in places where I'd have to swim underwater?
Claustrophobia loomed large and I struggled to climb onto the dive float, hoping to at least pull a portion of me out of the water. I managed to make it part of the way as the current rock-and-rolled.
